TV: Tennis, NBC

Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Alexander Zverev is coming off a five sets win over Damir Džumhur that took 54 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 60 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Zverev wasn’t at his best, as he was broken eight times and racked up 59 unforced errors. However, Zverev found a way to win and these grind it out victories only improve his confidence, as he knows he can win when he doesn’t play his best. The one concern with Zverev is that he’s now played 13 sets in this tournament to get to this point. When you add that to all the tennis he’s played overall this season, Zverev could be hitting a wall at some point. It takes a lot to play this much and still be fresh against some of the top players in the world. Zverev is in his second career fourth round appearance in a grand slam and hopes to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal. Zverev has won 16 of his last 17 matches on clay court.

Alexander Zverev vs. Karen Khachanov 2018 French Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Karen Khachanov is coming off a straight sets win over Lucas Pouille that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Khachanov won 78 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Khachanov had little trouble in his third round victory, as he hit 32 winners and gave himself 16 break chances. Khachanov is hitting the ball with confidence, looking to be aggressive and is doing a good job of controlling the point. Khachanov has now won nine of the 10 sets played in this tournament and has a chance for this to be his breakthrough grand slam appearance at just 22 years old. Khachanov is in his second career fourth round appearance in a grand slam and hopes to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal. Khachanov has split his last six matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2016 St. Petersburg Open, a match Zverev won in straight sets. The match took 23 games to be decided.

Khachanov is playing well and has a chance to win this match given the way he’s returning and spraying winners. I’m also a little worried about Zverev and his fitness, as all this tennis is eventually going to catch up to him. With that said, I just can’t bet against the German. He’s too talented and either destroys his opponent or finds ways to win without playing his best. You can’t bet against Zverev until he gives you a reason to.

I like Zverev to make his first grand slam quarterfinal.
