Fernando Verdasco and Novak Djokovic meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Fernando Verdasco is coming off a straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Verdasco won 69 percent of his first serve points and 44 percent of his second serve points. Verdasco pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the tournament so far by getting 70 percent of his first serves in play and giving himself 10 break chances. Verdasco now has three wins over top-10 players this year and has to be as confident as he’s been in a while. Verdasco has a long reputation of struggling against top tier players, so these wins on the big stage have to be good for the 34-year-old Spaniard. Verdasco hopes to make the fifth career grand slam quarterfinal of his career and the first since the 2013 Wimbledon. Verdasco has won five of his last eight matches on clay court.

Novak Djokovic is coming off a four sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut that took 44 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 69 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic hit 50 winners and broke his opponent eight times in his third round victory. Djokovic is easily playing the best tennis since his return and while he can clean up a few things, you are starting to see the confidence and the swagger return to his game. The more success Djokovic has, the scarier he becomes as a legit French Open contender. Djokovic hopes to make the quarterfinal of a grand slam for the 10th time in his last 13 tries. Djokovic has won eight of his last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have played 14 times and Djokovic has won 10 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Australian Open, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. Verdasco’s last win over Djokovic was in the 2010 Rome Masters. Verdasco is 3-2 in his career against Djokovic on clay.
Verdasco has success against Djokovic on clay and has three wins over top-10 players this season, playing some of his best tennis as of late. However, Verdasco also has a history of folding against top tier players on big stages. There’s a reason he hasn’t made a deep grand slam run in quite some time. There’s levels to this, folks.
Djokovic reaches the quarters of the French Open for the ninth straight year.
