TV: Tennis, NBC

Garbine Muguruza and Lesia Tsurenko meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Samantha Stosur that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 76 percent of her first serve points and 61 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza was lights out in her third round victory, winning 61 percent of her return points and producing just nine unforced errors. Muguruza came into this tournament in shaky form, but if she’s going to play that clean tennis, she’s a serious candidate to win another French Open title. While Stosur isn’t the best of competition these days, that third round victory was one of the more complete matches we’ve seen Muguruza play in quite some time. Muguruza hopes to make her seventh career grand slam quarterfinal and her fourth in the French Open. Muguruza has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Lesia Tsurenko is coming off a straight sets win over Magdaléna Rybáriková that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Tsurenko won 77 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Tsurenko broke her opponent five times and had just 13 unforced errors in her third round victory. It’s been a while since Tsurenko has won a match in straight sets, and it’s a victory that should give her a great deal of confidence. Tsurenko is also playing with house money at this point given this is just her second career grand slam fourth round trip. Tsurenko hopes to make her first career grand slam quarterfinal appearance. Tsurenko has split her last six matches on clay court.

These two have split the two previous meetings, as Muguruza won in the 2017 Wuhan Open and Tsurenko won in the 2015 Canadian Masters. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

While consistency has been an issue recently, it’s hard to bet against Muguruza with the way she just played. That was 2016 French Open winning Muguruza we just saw. Of course, I’m not sure if it continues, but she’s a title contender if she can bottle such a performance. Also, experience matters the deeper you get in a grand slam, and Tsurenko has no previous grand slam success.

Muguruza should win this match in straight sets.
