Buzarnescu vs. Keys

June 2018

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: Tennis, NBC

Madison Keys and Mihaela Buzarnescu meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets win over Naomi Osaka that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Keys won 78 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Keys won 49 percent of her return points and hit 30 winners in her third round victory. As long as Keys is dominating her first serve points and hitting more winners than unforced errors, she’s going to be a tough out for anybody in this remaining draw. The issue for Keys is when those unforced error numbers surpass her winners, as that’s when she gets in trouble. As of right now, Keys seems to be in great shape. Keys has a chance to make her fifth career grand slam quarterfinal and the first at the French Open. Keys has won five of her last six matches on clay court.

Madison Keys vs. Mihaela Buzarnescu 2018 French Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Mihaela Buzarnescu is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Buzarnescu won 67 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Buzarnescu pulled off probably the upset of the tournament by hitting 31 winners and giving herself 10 break chances. It was by far the biggest win over Buzarnescu’s career at 30 years old and this tournament is the first time she’s ever won a grand slam match. Buzarnescu just bounced one of the contenders in this tournament, and it’s going to be interesting to see how she handles the nerves after such a performance. Getting the victory is one thing, but controlling your emotions to continue a grand slam run is completely different. Regardless, Buzarnescu is a name to keep an eye on at this point. Buzarnescu has won six of her last seven matches on clay court.

This will be the first ever match between these players.

Buzarnescu deserves credit for beating one of the top players in the world in straight sets. She’s the cinderella of the tournament. But putting together back-to-back performances against quality players is probably asking too much. Buzarnescu is clearly enjoying her breakout season, but it’s still early in the process to predict a grand slam quarterfinal, and she has yet to face somebody of Keys power.

I expect the American to hit through the underdog.
