Yulia Putintseva and Barbora Strycova meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Yulia Putintseva is coming off a three sets win over Wang Qiang that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Putintseva won 63 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Putintseva won her match by getting 70 percent of her first serves in play and hitting 39 winners. However, Putintseva could be much better with her second serve and needs to trim the 54 unforced errors she had in the third round. Putintseva showed great fight after winning a match in which she drooped the first set, but those error numbers need to drop if this is going to be one of the deeper grand slam runs of her career. Putintseva hopes to make her second career grand slam quarterfinal and the first since the 2016 French Open. Putintseva has won four of her last five matches on clay court.

Barbora Strycova is coming off a straight sets win over Kateřina Siniaková that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Strycova won 62 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Strycova won 48 percent of her return points and converted on four of her seven break points. Strycova has now produced a combined nine breaks in her last two matches. Strycova has now won six of her seven sets played in this tournament and is going to be a handful if she keeps having success with her aggressive return. Coming into this tournament on a eight-match losing streak, this success has to feel good for her confidence. Strycova hopes to make her second career grand slam quarterfinal and the first since the 2014 Wimbledon. Strycova has split her last six matches on clay court.
These two have played twice and Strycova has won both meetings. The matches took place in the 2017 Birmingham Classic and 2012 challenger play, both won in straight sets.
Strycova seems to have found her form this tournament after struggling for much of this season, and she should be favored here with the way she’s played her last few matches. Putintseva usually fizzles out in grand slams around this time and is going to have a tough time if she keeps racking up the unforced errors. Strycova has been the cleaner player in her first three matches.
Give me Strycova to reach her second grand slam quarterfinal.
