Maria Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Maria Sharapova was able to advance to her first grand slam quarterfinal since the 2016 Australian Open when Serena Williams withdrew due to an arm injury. Sharapova is coming off her best showing in quite some time in which she bullied Karolína Plíšková in straight sets, and you would have loved to see her build on such a performance, but the rest certainly can’t hurt the 31-year-old. Sharapova has shown flashes recently of returning to great form, and as long as her serve is consistent, she’s a threat to beat anybody in the remaining draw. Sharapova has won 10 of her last 11 grand slam quarterfinal appearances. Sharapova looks to reach her first grand slam semifinal since the 2015 Wimbledon. Sharapova has won 11 of her last 13 matches on clay court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Garbine Muguruza is coming off a victory over Lesia Tsurenko that took two games to decide before retiring. In the victory, Muguruza won 80 percent of her first serve points and 100 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza has now played just 16 games in her last two matches combined, so she should be possibly the freshet player remaining in the tournament. Muguruza has been playing some of her best tennis in quite some time recently and is a legit threat to win her third grand slam title if she can continue to serve the way she has in her last few matches. Muguruza hopes to make her fourth career grand slam semifinal appearance and second in the French Open. Muguruza is 3-3 in her career in grand slam quarterfinal appearances. Muguruza has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.

These two have played three times and Sharapova has won all three meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 Canadian Masters, a match Sharapova won in three sets. Two of the three matches have gone the distance.

Sharapova no longer has a real rest advantage when you consider Muguruza only played two games in the fourth round. Also, while Sharapova looked great in her last match, she still has trouble putting opponents away and can struggle big time on her second serve. Muguruza in her current form is one of the best players in the world. Sharapova hasn’t shown the consistency of matching that level since her suspension.

Muguruza reaches the semis.
