Juan Martin Del Potro and Marin Cilic meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over John Isner that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 76 percent of his first serve points and 63 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 71 percent of his total service points and wasn’t broken once in his fourth round victory. Del Potro had very little trouble returning one of the best servers in the game and that has to give him confidence as he looks for an even deeper tournament run. Del Potro has been broken just three combined times in his last three matches. Del Potro has won each of his last 12 sets and has both his serve and return working at a high level. Del Potro hopes to make his fifth career grand slam semifinal and second semifinal appearance in the French Open. Del Potro is 4-6 in his career in grand slam quarterfinal matches and has made just one grand slam semifinal since 2014. Del Potro has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.

Marin Cilic is coming off a five sets win over Fabio Fognini that took 48 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 75 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Cilic played a much longer match than needed after winning the first two sets, but he hit 44 winners and won 66 percent of his total service points. Cilic continues to win a high number of his first serve points and is always a dangerous players when he’s spraying winners across the court. The issue for Cilic are the unforced errors, as he left the door open in the fourth round and paid for it by having to play a much longer match. Cilic hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the third time in his last four tries. Cilic is 5-6 in his career in grand slam quarterfinal appearances. Cilic has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played 12 times and Del Potro has won 10 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Swiss Indoors, a match Del Potro won in straight sets. Del Potro has won the last seven matches against Cilic, with the most recent loss coming in the 2011 Canadian Masters. Del Potro is 4-0 against Cilic on clay.
Cilic is playing well and can never be counted out, but playing a five setter doesn’t help him in terms of fatigue against a quality opponent. He’s also playing a guy in Del Potro who has owned him pretty much his entire career. When Del Potro is healthy and hitting the ball with confidence like he is, there are few who can hang with him regardless of surface.
I like Del Potro to continue his dominance of Cilic, reaching the semifinal.
