TV: Tennis, NBC

Dominic Thiem and Marco Cecchinato meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Dominic Thiem is coming off a straight sets win over Alexander Zverev that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Thiem won 79 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Thiem cruised in his quarterfinal victory, winning 75 percent of his total service points and not being broken once. Thiem has been in complete control of every match this tournament and is coming off his most complete performance over a young Zverev, who was clearly gassed after playing so much tennis. Thiem is one of the hotter players in the remaining draw and is in his third straight French Open semifinal. Thiem has a chance to reach his fourth final of the year and his first grand slam final appearance of his career. Thiem is 0-2 in grand slam semifinal appearances. Thiem has won nine straight matches on clay court.

Dominic Thiem vs. Marco Cecchinato 2018 French Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Marco Cecchinato is coming off a four sets win over Novak Djokovic that took 42 games to decide. In the victory, Cecchinato won 62 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Cecchinato managed to win the biggest match of his career despite being broken six times and hitting 41 unforced errors. Cecchinato went from having a losing record in ATP play for his career to making a grand slam semifinal appearance, while beating one of the best players ever in the process. We’ve seen crazy things in the sport of tennis over the years, but this is one of the more improbable runs I can remember. This is truly a career changing moment for the 25-year-old Italian who has done almost nothing on the big stage previously to this tournament. Cecchinato has a chance to reach his second career ATP final and first since this years Hungarian Open. Cecchinato has won six of his last eight matches on clay court.

These two have split their previous two meetings, as Thiem won the 2014 Qatar Open and Cecchinato won in 2013 Italy F17 Futures.

Cecchinato is the clear story of the tournament and was able to muscle his way through against Djokovic, when he had plenty of chances to fold. Whether he’s a late bloomer at 25 years old or this is just a flash in the pain situation, the Italian has earned the respect from tennis fans. Cecchinato is playing at a high level. However, it’s fair to question how much he has left in the tank at this point and you have to question just when the clock is going to strike midnight. Reaching the quarters or the semis out of nowhere happens sometimes. Reaching a grand slam final with no previous success? Never. There’s never been a better chance for Thiem to reach his first grand slam final.

Thiem wins.
