TV: Tennis, NBC

Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Rafael Nadal is coming off a four sets win over Diego Schwartzman that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 61 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Nadal had to work in his quarterfinal, as he was broken five times and hit 46 unforced errors. Nadal was in serious danger before the rain came and gave him a chance to recharge the batteries. It will be interesting to see if that was just a hiccup, or if those issues will carry over to the semis with no rest in-between matches. Nadal hopes to make his 11th French Open final appearance. Nadal also hopes to make his fourth grand slam final appearance since last year. Nadal hasn’t lost in a grand slam semifinal since the 2009 US Open. Nadal has won 10 of his last 11 matches on clay court.

Rafael Nadal vs. Juan Martin Del Potro 2018 French Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a four sets win over Marin Čilić that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 79 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 70 percent of his total service points and gave himself 13 break chances. Besides being broken once in the second set and being upset with a fan, Del Potro completely dominated his quarterfinal and looks to be in rare form at the moment. As long as Del Potro can avoid a high number of unforced errors, he has a shot to make this a lengthy, competitive match. Del Potro hopes to make his second career grand slam final and first since the 2009 US Open. Del Potro is 1-4 in his career in grand slam semifinal appearances. Del Potro has lost once in the French Open semifinal, which was in 2009. Del Potro has won six of his last seven matches on clay court.

These two have played 14 times and Nadal has won nine of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match Nadal won in four sets. Nadal is 3-0 against Del Potro on clay.

This is a trick match given the weird scheduling with the rain delays, but with both guys dealing with the same thing, you’re dealing with an even playing field. So, are you really betting against Nadal? Del Potro is certainly a worthy opponent and is playing some of his most consistent tennis of his career, but you kind of keep betting Nadal in this tournament until he loses. If he goes down, I’m going down with him.

Give me Nadal.
