Gael Monfils and Blaz Kavcic meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Antalya Open.

Gael Monfils enters this tournament losing each of his last three matches and will play his first match of the year on grass. Monfils has had an up and down year once again and has really struggled to find the form he was in back in 2016. Monfils has been real hit or miss with his serve as of late and isn’t spraying the number of winners we’re used to seeing from the talented Frechman. At some point you have to question if Monfils is 100 percent or if he’s back to his old habits where he just doesn’t care about the result. Either way, Monfils is in for a much needed pick me up victory before we get into Wimbledon play. Monfils has won five of his last seven matches on grass court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Blaz Kavcic is coming off a straight sets win over Marcos Baghdatis that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Kavcic won 90 percent of his first serve points and 73 percent of his second serve points. Kavcic is coming off a match in which he simply dominated his service game and saved all five of his break points. Kavcic is one of those players who obviously has little to no success on the big stage, but he has to have some sort of confidence after winning three matches to get to this point and serving the way he just did. Winning here would give Kavcic one of the biggest wins of his career at 31 years old. Kavcic has split his last six matches on grass court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2013 Croatia Open, a match Monfils won in straight sets. The match took 16 games to be decided.

Kavcic has to be the more confident player at the moment, but he’s also a player who beat three guys outside of the top-100 and came into this tournament with little to no recent ATP success. Monfils is in questionable form at best, but he’s always a win or two away from going on a deep tournament run and being one of the most dangerous players in the draw. This is a match Monfils should win in straight sets. If he doesn’t, he’s in trouble moving forward.

Monfils rolls.
