TV: Tennis

Kyle Edmund and Mikhail Kukushkin meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Eastbourne International.

Kyle Edmund is coming off a straight sets win over Andy Murray that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Edmund won 82 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Edmund won 70 percent of his total service points and saved four of five break chances. Edmund has been really sharp over the las couple of months and is going to make an even deeper run this tournament if he continues to serve well. When Edmund is using his power game and not facing break points, he’s one of the better young players in the world and capable of beating anybody. Edmund has a chance to make his third semifinal of the season and his first ever semifinal appearance on grass. Edmund has split his last six matches on grass court.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Mikhail Kukushkin is coming off a straight sets win over David Ferrer that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Kukushkin won 66 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Kukushkin won 64 percent of his total service points and managed to save all seven of his break points. Kukushkin has lost a combined five games in his last two matches, playing easily the best two matches in a row this season. Kukushkin entered this tournament in questionable form at best, but after slicing and dicing a top-40 player in the world, the 30-year-old has to be feeling pretty good about himself at the moment. Kukushkin has a chance to reach his first ATP semifinal appearance since Memphis of 2017. Kukushkin has split his last six matches on grass court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Kukushkin is coming off an impressive result and has been lights out in his first two matches this tournament. However, Edmund’s power will determine nearly every point in this match and as long as he’s clean as he was against Murray, he won’t have any issues. This is a big step up in competition from what Kukushkin faced the first two matches. Based on his play before this tournament, I’m not sure Kukushkin can pass this test.

Edmund makes his first ever semifinal appearance on grass.
