Stan Wawrinka vs. Grigor Dimitrov

July 2018

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Grigor Dimitrov has had a real up and down season and could use some grand slam success to kind of turn things around. Dimitrov is coming off a loss in which he won just 23 return points and had five double faults. Dimitrov simply doesn’t look like the top-five player who made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year. Dimitrov has all of the talent in the world to beat anybody he’s matched up against, so if he can put things together early, he’s a serious dark horse to make a deep run in this tournament. Dimitrov hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2016 French Open. Dimitrov has won seven of his last 10 matches on grass court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Stan Wawrinka is another player who hasn’t been himself, but a lot of his struggles come from not playing due to injury. Wawrinka does have 14 matches under his belt this season, but he’s missed a lot of time off and on and hasn’t been the consistent player he was before his knee injury. We know what Wawrinka is capable of when in good form, as he’s won three grand slams between 2014-16 and is one of the top shotmakers in the field. However, Wawrinka has a ways to go before being the player he was back in 2016 when he made five finals. Wawrinka has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2017. Wawrinka has lost four of his last five matches on grass court.

These two have played six times and Dimitrov has won four of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2016 Cincinnati Masters, a match Dimitrov won in straight sets. Dimitrov has won the last four meetings against Wawrinka, with the last loss coming in the 2013 Madrid Masters.

Both of these guys are in full struggle mode, but Dimitrov has been the healthier and more consistent player of the two. Of course, that’s without mentioning that Wawrinka is notorious for starting off slow in grand slam play and getting stronger the longer the tournament goes. Unfortunately, he won’t have that chance here.

Dimitrov rolls in possibly three sets.
