Donna Vekic has turned her season around on clay and grass the last couple of months, which includes a semifinal appearance in Nottingham. Vekic has had a great deal of success with her return and she’s damn near unbeatable when she’s giving herself double-digit break chances. Vekic is almost a top-40 player for the first time in her career, and if she can win this match on this level, it would be one of the biggest wins of her career at 21 years old. Vekic has two career wins over top-10 players, one coming in 2014 and the other coming in 2017. Vekic has made the second round of a grand slam five times in her last six appearances. Vekic has split her last six matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2016 Internationaux de Strasbourg, a match Stephens won in three sets. The match took 26 games to be decided.
Vekic is going to make this a match given her return skills and how consistent she’s been as of late. Vekic is a young player to keep an eye on going forward. However, Stephens has become one of the best big tournament players on the women’s side and is tough to bet against. Her mental toughness and ability to grind matches out even when she’s not playing well has been impressive.
Stephens wins in two competitive sets.
