Venus Williams vs. Johanna Larsson 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Johanna Larsson vs. Venus Williams

July 2018

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Venus Williams and Johanna Larsson meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Venus Williams hasn’t been the same player she was last year or in 2016, as she’s lost four of her last five matches and has been an unforced error machine. While it takes just a couple of victories to change the outlook on a player, you have to question if being 38 years old is finally catching up to the American. With women’s tennis improving drastically in depth over the years, it’s going to become a lot tougher for these older players to compete with fresh legs. Maybe not playing since the French Open will be good for Williams. Venus has made at least the semifinals in each of her last two Wimbledon appearances. Venus has lost in the first round of her last two grand slam appearances. Venus has won 10 of her last 10 matches on grass court.

Venus Williams vs. Johanna Larsson 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Johanna Larsson is currently playing her best tennis of the season, as she won three matches in Mallorca and made the final of the Nurnberger Versicherungscup. Larsson still has many hiccups with her serve, but she’s been feisty with her return and gives herself plenty of break chances to sink her teeth into the match. If Larsson can improve her second serve percentages, she’s more than capable of surprising some folks on the big stage. The problem is Larsson has lost in the first round of a grand slam in each of her last four appearances. Larsson is 0-6 in her career in Wimbledon appearances. Larsson has won three of her last four matches on grass court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2013 Davis Cup, which Venus won in straight sets. The match took 21 games to be decided.

Larsson is more than capable of winning this match and is worth a strong look betting wise. However, if forced to pick, I’d back Venus purely off experience. Larsson has lost all six matches in the Wimbledon and has lost four straight grand slam matches overall. Say what you want about Venus’ form, she rises to the occasion on the big stage.

Don’t love it, but give me Venus.
