TV: ESPN

Juan Martin Del Potro and Peter Gojowczyk meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Juan Martin Del Potro should be plenty rested entering this tournament considering he hasn’t played since making the semifinals of the French Open. Del Potro has played arguably the best tennis of his life this year now that he’s finally injury free and no longer has those flair ups that have prevented him from finishing matches. With an aggressive serve and one of the better returns in the game, Del Potro is a threat to win whenever he takes the court and already has three titles under his belt this season. Del Potro hasn’t had a ton of success at Wimbledon, but he’s not a guy you want to bet against given his current form. Del Potro hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2007 French Open. Del Potro has split his last eight matches on grass court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Peter Gojowczyk also hasn’t played since the French Open, but his tournament ended after one set in which he retired due to a groin injury. It’s going to be interesting to see if Gojowczyk is fully recovered or if there are lingering issues, as he hasn’t played since that performance. Gojowczyk has had his moments this year, which ncldues making the final of the Delray Beach Open and Geneva Open, so when healthy, he’s certainly no pushover first round opponent. It’s just a matter of how fit Gojowczyk is for a match at this level. Gojowczyk has two career wins over top-10 players, which one of them coming this year against Jack Sock. Gojowczyk has made it to the second round of a grand slam four times in his career. Gojowczyk has won six of his last eight matches on grass court.

There’s no history between these two players.

This could be one of the better first round matches assuming Gojowczyk is healthy and ready to go. Gojowczyk is no slouch, as he’s a top-40 player in the world and has made three final appearances in the last 10 months. Gojowczyk could steal a set here if you’re looking for a bet outside of an outright winner. In terms of who advances, you can’t bet against Del Potro. He’s playing the best tennis of his life right now and hasn’t lost one match into a tournament since the 2016 Shanghai Masters.

Del Potro wins in four sets.
