Viktoriya Tomova vs. Serena Williams
The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Serena Williams and Viktoriya Tomova meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Arantxa Rus that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 76 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Serena continues to grind out her victories and find ways to win despite not playing her best. Serena can still drastically improve her service percentages and is coming off a match in which she hit more unforced errors (29) than winners (23). Serena is still ahead of the curve in terms of her return, but the fact she’s finding ways to win despite not playing her best, well, that’s bad news for the rest of the competition. It’s only a matter of time before Serena’s game improves even more with increased reps. Serena hasn’t lost before the third round of a grand slam since the 2014 French Open. Serena has never lost before the third round of the Wimbledon. Serena has won 15 straight matches on grass court.

Viktoriya Tomova is coming off a straight sets win over Tereza Smitkova that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Tomova won 67 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Tomova won 52 percent of her return points and had just six unforced errors in what was her first ever grand slam victory. Tomova will be entering just her third ever grand slam match of her career at 23 years so old, so regardless of result, this is much needed experience. In order to have any chance of making this a match, Tomova must continue to play clean tennis and avoid a large number of unforced errors, as players who beat themselves stand zero chance of beating Serena. Nerves will also be key for Tomova given that she has little to no experience playing on the big stage. Tomova has split her last four matches on grass court.
There’s no previous matches between these two players.
Tomova was sharp in her first grand slam victory, but there’s a difference between beating a player ranked outside of the top-150 and beating Serena. Tomova likely loses this match before they even step on the court, as nerves are sure to be a factor and a lack of experience hurts drastically. You have to be mentally strong to compete against Serena, as he mental toughness wills her to victory even when she’s playing poorly.
Serena wins this match in two very quick sets.
