TV: ESPN

Donna Vekic and Yanina Wickmayer meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Donna Vekic is coming off a straight sets win over Rebecca Peterson that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Vekic won 74 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Vekic managed to win 70 percent of her total service points and had just 15 unforced errors in her second round victory. Vekic followed up her victory over Sloane Stephens quite nicely and has to see an opening to have her breakthrough grand slam performance. As long as Vekic can manage her unforced error numbers and play overall clean tennis, the draw has opened up for her to make a decent grand slam run. Vekic has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Vekic has won six of her last nine matches on grass court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Yanina Wickmayer is coming off a straight sets win over Andrea Petkovic that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Wickmayer won 63 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Wickmayer got 70 percent of her first serves in play and won 60 percent of her total service points in her second round victory. Wickmayer also dominated the second serve return, winning almost 60 percent, which sends a fair warning to the rest of her opponents. Wickmayer has now won nine of her last 14 sets played and gives herself a chance to make an even deeper run if she can continue to produce double-digit break chances. Wickmayer hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2015 Australian Open. Wickmayer has split his last eight matches on grass court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Canadian Masters, a match Wickmayer won in three sets. The match took 29 games to be decided.

If Vekic is going to make a deep grand slam run any time soon, it’s probably here. She’s not only playing at a high level right now, but her section has opened up to the point she could make it to the quarterfinals. Wickmayer is a consistent early exit in grand slam play and isn’t serving at a high enough level to trust in bigger matches. This is a great chance for the 22-year-old from Croatia.

Vekic makes the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career.
