Dominika Cibulkova and Elise Mertens meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Dominika Cibulkova is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Konta that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Cibulkova won 82 percent of her first serve points and 69 percent of her second serve points. Cibulkova got 75 percent of her first serves in play and had just nine unforced errors. A near flawless performance, Cibulkova has really been great with her first serve through her first two matches, and with a fiery personality, you know she’s feeling good about herself at the moment. Cibulkova has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2016 Wimbledon. It would be the fourth time since 2013 that Cibulkova has made the fourth round of a grand slam. Cibulkova has won three of her last four matches on grass court.

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Sachia Vickery that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 69 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Mertens won 67 percent of her total service points, 57 percent of her return points and had just 11 unforced errors. Mertens simply dominated her second round victory in all areas and has been broken a combined two times in her first two matches. We’re starting t see the 22-year-old come into her own and put together really impressive performances. Mertens hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the third straight appearance. Mertens is now 2-1 in her career in Wimbledon matches. Mertens has won three of her last four matches on grass court.

These two have split there previous two matches, as Mertens won in New Heaven in 2017, while Cibulkova won in Beijing in 2017. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

Both of these players are playing at a high level right now, so you can make a strong case for either side. The difference for me is Cibulkova and her aggressiveness, as she’s a player who thrives on attitude and confidence, so when she’s playing well, she’s tough to bet against. It’s tough to break Cibulkova’s spirit when she’s feeling good about her game. This is a chance for Cibulkova to get back in a deep grand slam run.

I’ll give the slight edge to Cibulkova in this coin flip match.
