TV: ESPN

Kei Nishikori and Ernests Gulbis meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Kei Nishikori is coming off a straight sets win over Nick Kyrgios that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Nishikori won 80 percent of his first serve points and 69 percent of his second serve points. Nishikori won 77 percent of his total service points and converted on four of his eight break chances. It was one of the more complete performances for Nishikori since his return from injury and one that should provide a great deal of confidence moving froward. If Nishikori is going to serve like that the rest of the way, he’s going to be a tough out. Nishikori hopes to make his eighth career grand slam quarterfinal and first since the 2017 French Open. Nishikori has never made the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon. Nishikori has won four of his last five matches on grass court.

Kei Nishikori vs. Ernests Gulbis 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Ernests Gulbis is coming off a five sets win over Alexander Zverev that took 50 games to decide. In the victory, Gulbis won 73 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points. Gulbis won the final two sets while losing just three games and managed to win 75 percent of his return points in the fifth set. It was easily one of the biggest recent wins for Gulbis and puts him in the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2015 French Open. It’s not always pretty for the soon-to-be-30-year-old, but Gulbis has got to like where he’s at with his game right now, especially after earning his first win over a top-10 player in two years. Gulbis has a chance to make his third career grand slam quarterfinal and first since the 2016 French Open. Gulbis has never made the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon. Gulbis has won eight of his last nine matches on grass court.

These two have played twice and Nishikori has won both meetings. The most recent match was in Barcelona of 2014, a match Nishikori won in straight sets. The other match was in 2008 challenger play.

Gulbis has now own six straight grass matches to get to this point and is coming off a rather impressive victory. However, Gulbis has shown very little consistency to believe he can beat back-to-back quality opponents in the same tournament. Nishikori is finally healthy and has his serve to go along with his movement and defensive skills. When Nishikori is playing at a high level both offensively and defensively, he’s one of the better players in the world.

Nishikori should cruise into the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
