Dominika Cibulkova and Jelena Ostapenko meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Dominika Cibulkova is coming off a straight sets win over Su-Wei Hsieh that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Cibulkova won 53 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Cibulkova won a straight sets match despite being broken four times, as she won 67 percent of her return points and converted on seven of 12 break points. Cibulkova has now produced 12 breaks in her last two matches combined and has won 10 of her last 12 played sets. Cibulkova must improve her serve if she’s going to continue advancing, but right now the confidence is flowing and the feisty 29-year-old has to like where she’s at right now. Cibulkova has a chance to make her third career grand slam semifinal and first since the 2014 Australian Open. Cibulkova has never made the semifinals of the Wimbledon and is 2-5 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Cibulkova has won five of her last six matches on grass court.

Dominika Cibulkova vs. Jelena Ostapenko 2018 Wimbledon Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a straight sets win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 78 percent of her first serve points and 25 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko hit 28 winners, produced six breaks on 12 chances and didn’t drop a single game in the second set. Ostapenko is now 12-2 in her last 14 sets played since her first round French Open exit and has produced 16 combined breaks in her last three matches. However, like Cibulkova, Ostapenko could improve her service numbers to make her matches a little less dramatic. Still, Ostapenko is a different player right now than she was during clay season. Ostapenko has a chance to make her second career grand slam semifinal and first since the 2017 French Open. Ostapenko has never made the semifinals of the Wimbledon and is 1-1 in career grand slam quarterfinal matches. Ostapenko has won six of her last seven matches on grass court.

These two have played twice and Cibulkova won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Indian Wells Masters, a match Cibulkova won in three sets. The other meeting was in the 2016 Eastbourne International.

This is going to be a hell of a match, as we have two of the feistiest and most competitive players in the draw going at it. Emotions are sure to be high and the momentum swings are likely going to change throughout. And while Ostapenko is probably the safer bet here, I’m going to back Cibulkova. I’ve said it all tournament, she’s one of those players that oozes with confidence and when things are going well, she’s tough to bet against. She’s hitting her spots and the return has been incredible. Ostapenko can still let her emotions get the best of her and has struggled with her serve at times this tournament.

Tough match that probably goes three sets, but I’m going to continue riding the momentum of Cibulkova.
