Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 75 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 64 percent of her total service points, broke four times and produced 30 winners. It was one of Goerges’ most complete performances of the tournament, as her previous two matches went there sets, and she saved all nine of he break points. Goerges has truly grinded out all of her victories up to this point, and while she has been a top-10 player, this has a chance to be her true breakthrough moment at 29 years old. The only question with Goerges at this point are the nerves, as they usually come into play for players who are this deep into a big tournament for the first time. Goerges has a chance to make her first grand slam semifinal. Goerges has won six of her last eight matches on grass court.
These two have played twice and Bertens has won both meetings. The most recent match was in this years Volvo Car Open, a match Bertens won in 15 games. The other meeting was in the 2016 Nuremberg Cup, a match Bertens won in three sets.
You can make a case for either of these players and Goerges is tough to bet against with her ability to just wear down her opponent and find ways to win when she’s not playing her best. However, Bertens has been the more consistent player of the two and has had head and shoulders the more impressive victories. Not to take anything away from Goerges, but she had a lot of luck with the draw. Bertens has beaten two top-10 players this week and has done so rather easily. It seems like this is her chance to shine on the big stage.
Bertens reaches her second career grand slam semifinal.
