July 2018

TV: ESPN

Kevin Anderson and John Isner meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Kevin Anderson is coming off a five sets win over Roger Federer that took 67 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 76 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Anderson made an incredible comeback after dropping the first two sets, and he managed to hit 65 winners and converted on four of his seven break points. Anderson has earned a ton of free points with his serve this tournament, and while he’s not been great with his return, he’s been able to break just enough with the few chances he’s had. As long as Anderson can hold his serve, he’s going to put tremendous pressure on his opponent to pretty much play perfect tennis on the other side. Anderson hopes to make his second career grand slam final and first since the 2017 US Open. Anderson is 1-0 in previous grand slam semifinal matches. A win here would give Anderson his fourth final appearance of the year overall and the 17th for his career. Anderson has won five straight matches on grass court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

John Isner is coming off a four sets win over Milos Raonic that took 45 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 90 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Isner lost just nine of 88 first serve points and produced 25 aces in his quarterfinal victory. Isner is the only player in this tournament who has not been broken, and he’s won 15 of his last 18 sets, so it’s not like he enters this match on fumes. This is the rare deep tournament run Isner has made where he should still have fresh legs and continue to be highly effective with his serve. As long as the serve remains intact, Isner has a chance against anybody on the planet. Isner looks to make his first career grand slam final appearance. Isner has a chance to make his second final appearance on the year and the 26th of his career. Isner has won nine straight matches on grass court.

These two have played 11 times and Isner has won eight of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2015 Indian Wells Masters, a match Isner won in straight sets. Anderson hasn’t won a match against Isner since Delray Beach in 2012. This will be the second match between these two on grass.

Anderson and Isner have very similar games and there won’t be many breaks, so it comes down to who serves better and who can do just enough to win a tiebreak. Isner not only dominates the head to head against Anderson, but he’s also much fresher entering the semifinals. Anderson is fresh off a marathon match that not only drained him physically, but mentally as well, as it’s not easy to rebound from coming back down two sets. Isner also has to view this as his breakthrough moment, as he’s had very few success on the big stage with just one grand slam quarterfinal before his previous match. This is his chance to at least make a grand slam final and solidify himself as the best American in tennis.

I like Isner to grind out a victory.
