Steve Johnson and Marcel Granollers meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Hall of Fame Championships.

Steve Johnson is coming off a straight sets win over Dudi Sela that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Johnson won 84 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Johnson won 68 percent of his total service points in the victory and saved both his break points. Johnson hasn’t been broken once in his last two matches and seems to always play his best tennis on American soil. Johnson is always capable of putting together impressive showings, but he’s fair more consistent and comfortable playing in his home country. Johnson is hitting his spots and has been lights out with his first serve this tournament. Johnson has a chance to make his second final of the season and his fifth for his career. Three of Johnson’s possible five final appearances would have taken place in the United States, if he can get the victory here, obviously. Johnson has split his last six matches on grass court.

Marcel Granollers is coming off a straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Granollers won 65 percent of his first serve points and 69 percent of his second serve points. Granollers won 67 percent of his total service points, was broken just once and produced five breaks on 12 chances. Granollers has now won 13 of his last 15 sets played and has been serving at a very high level in this tournament. Granollers has been broken just twice in his last six sets, and that’s a formula that gives him a chance against anybody in this remaining tournament. Granollers has a chance to make his eighth final appearance of his career and the first since the 2014 Grand Prix Hassan II. Granollers has won five of his last seven matches on grass court.

These two have played twice and Johnson has won both meetings. The most recent meeting was in the 2015 Indian Wells Masters, a match Johnson won in straight sets. The other match was in Tokyo of 2014.

Granollers hasn’t made a final appearance in more than four years, so while he’s playing well at the moment, he usually fizzles out around this time of tournaments. Johnson is also at his best when playing in the United States and serves with far more energy. You have to like the American in this spot.

Johnson reaches the final.
