Alize Cornet and Mandy Minella meet in the final of the 2018 tennis Swiss Open.

Alize Cornet is coming off a straight sets win over Eugenie Bouchard that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Cornet won 58 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Cornet won a tight first set tiebreak and then the match was pretty much over as Bouchard retired after one game in the second set. Cornet has yet to drop a set this tournament and should be extremely well rested given the lack of tennis she had to play in her semifinal victory. Cornet has been very sharp with her return, but she could be much better with her serve, especially when she’s getting such a high percentage of her first serves in play. There’s no reason to win less than 60 percent of your first serve points when getting 73 percent of the first serves in play. Cornet has a chance to win her sixth career title and first since the 2016 Hobart International. Cornet has split her last 10 final appearances overall and is 3-3 in final appearances on clay court. Cornet has won five of her last six matches on clay court.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Mandy Minella is coming off a three sets win over Marketa Vondrousova that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Minella won 73 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Minella showed great fight in her semifinal victory, as she lost a combined four games in the final two sets after dropping the first set in 10 games. Minella dropped just one first serve point in the third set and ended up converting on four of her five break points for the match. Minella has now won 11 of her last 16 sets played and has to like her chances given that she’s coming off one of her best serving performances in quite some time. Minella has a chance to win her first ever WTA singles title, and this is her first ever appearance at 32 years old. Needless to say, this is the biggest moment of Minella’s career in terms of singles play. Minella has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in 2012 challenger play, a match Cornet won in straight sets. The match took 15 games to be decided.

Minella has been impressive this tournament and is coming off a match in which she dominated late despite getting off to a rocky start. It’s also tough to bet against Minella given that she’s going to be as motivated as ever to win this match considering this might be her only chance to win a singles title. However, Cornet has been the more consistent, sharper player up to this point and is coming off a match in which she had to play just 14 games. That’s a huge advantage. Not to mention the French player is head and shoulder more experienced on the big stage and plays her best tennis on the clay surface.

I like Cornet to win her sixth career title.
