Alex de Minaur vs. John Isner

TV: Tennis

John Isner and Alex de Minaur meet in the second round of the Atlanta Open.

John Isner will play for the first time since his marathon match against Kevin Anderson in the Wimbledon semifinals. Isner should be recovered from the draining performance after a couple of weeks off, and he returns to the state of Georgia to play on his favorite surface. Isner went to the University of Georgia, so this tournament is special to him, and he’s a four-time winner here with seven final appearances overall. Isner usually plays his best when playing in the United States and is head and shoulders the favorite in this tournament as long as his serve holds up. If Isner can serve the way he was in the Wimbledon, there’s nobody in this draw who can come close to beating him. Hopefully the American has his legs under him and is ready to go. Isner has won seven of his last 10 matches on hard court.

John Isner vs. Alex de Minaur 2018 Atlanta Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Alex de Minaur is coming off a three sets win over Hubert Hurkacz that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, de Minaur won 58 percent of his first serve points and 76 percent of his second serve points. de Minaur showed great fight by winning back-to-back tiebreaks after dropping the first set 1-6. de Minaur managed to win 66 percent of his total service points and was broken just twice in his final two sets. de Minaur hasn’t been able to put together a complete match recently, as he’s struggled with his form and has had to grind out ugly victories, but his most recent performance was rather impressive and should give him a great deal of confidence heading into this match. de Minaur is just finding a way to advance these days. de Minaur has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.

This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.

To beat Isner in his current form, you have to pretty much play perfect tennis and be able to hold serve consistently. de Minaur has been more than breakable recently and has these dips in his game. Isner is going to pounce of those mistakes and cruise to a straight sets victory.

This is the one tournament that Isner has owned over the years and isn’t going to lose against a player who has had issues against lesser players.
