Matthew Ebden and John Isner meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Atlanta Open.

Matthew Ebden is coming off a straight sets win over Marcos Baghdatis that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Ebden won 80 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Ebden won 68 percent of his total service points and saved the only break point he faced. Ebden has now been broken just once in his last four sets and gives himself a chance in this match as well if he can continue to serve at such a high percentage. In fact, it’s no secret Ebden needs to serve out of his mind in order to beat the tall American. Ebden has a chance to make his second career final appearance and first since last years Hall of Fame Championships. Ebden has won seven straight matches on hard court.

Matthew Ebden vs. John Isner 2018 Atlanta Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

John Isner is coming off a three sets win over Mischa Zverev that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 95 percent of his first serve points and 68 percent of his second serve points. Isner had some shaky spots in his quarterfinal victory but buckled down when needed and dominated the final set in which he lost just one game. Isner has done a much better job with his back against the wall this year, and he won 84 percent of his service points with nine aces in the third set. There’s not many players in the world who can match that shot for shot.  Isner has a chance to make his second final appearance of the year and the 26th of his career. A win here and eight of Isner’s last nine final appearances have taken place in the United States. Isner has won eight straight matches on hard court.

These two have played four times and Isner has won three of the matches. The most recent match was in this years Australian Open, a match Ebden won in four sets. Three of the four matches have been decided in straight sets.

Give Ebden credit for making it this far and giving himself a shot at one of the bigger moments of his career, but there’s no betting against Isner against lesser competition on American soil. He plays his best in the states and that power serve is always the tipping point. Ebden can’t counter or outhit Isner on hard court. Yes, he did beat him earlier this year, but that was Isner when he was struggling and couldn't beat anybody. That's not the case now.

Inner reaches the final.
