Maria Sakkari and Venus Williams meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Stanford Classic.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Timea Babos that took 13 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 77 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari is coming of her most dominant performance of the tournament yet in which she won the first 11 points of the match before losing serve to complete the double bagel. Overall, Sakkari won 74 percent of her return points and converted on seven of her eight break points. It was just a complete beatdown of a top-40 player in the country, and she now has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since Istanbul. Sakkari has lost a combined five games in her last four sets played. Sakkari has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.

Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Heather Watson that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 76 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Venus won 62 percent of her total service points and ended up winning the final set 6-0. It was a much needed performance for Venus, who entered this tournament in extremely poor form and couldn’t get anything going. It was nice to see Venus serve well and put a match away when she had the chance. One match certainly doesn’t make us forget about the way she played in previous tournaments, but maybe the rest and playing on her home soil will help her get back on the right track. Venus has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Venus won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match Venus won in straight sets. The match was in the 2016 Wimbledon, a match Venus won in three sets.
Venus usually always plays her best in American tournaments, and her recent victory was the best we’ve seen her play possibly all year. All isn’t forgotten of course, but Venus is more than capable of bottling that performance and doing it again here. Sakkari is a respectable opponent, but Venus has had her way with her in the past.
On hard court, Venus should cruise in this match.
