Svetlana Kuznetsova and Donna Vekic meet in the final of the 2018 tennis Citi Open.
Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a straight sets win over Andrea Petkovic that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Kuznetsova won 61 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Kuznetsova won 60 percent of her total service points and 55 percent of her return points. It was quite a performance from Kuznetsova considering she played two matches yesterday due to the delay, and she lost a combined eight games in her last four sets. Kuznetsova hopes to win the 18th title of her career and first title since the 2016 Kremlin Cup. Kuznetsova is playing high level tennis at the moment, but the main question now is how the 33-year-old will rebound from playing basically three matches within a little over 24 hours. Even with quick results, this is a lot of tennis Kuznetsova is playing in such a short span. Kuznetsova has split her last 10 final appearances and is 13-14 in career final appearances on hard court. Kuznetsova has split her last eight matches on hard court.

Donna Vekic is coming off a straight sets win over Zheng Saisai that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Vekic won 72 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Vekic won 62 percent of her total service points and 56 percent of her return points. Producing six breaks in her semifinal victory, Vekic has now broken a combined 15 times in her last three matches. Vekic has been really consistent with her play since the grass court season and this has a moment to be probably the biggest moment of her career so far at 22 years old. Vekic looks for her third career title and first since the 2017 Nottingham Open. Vekic is 1-2 in career final appearances on hard court and 2-3 in final appearances overall. Vekic has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have split their two meetings, as Kuznetsova won in Tianjin in 2016, and Vekic won in the 2014 Miami Masters. Both matches were decided in straight sets.
Kuznetsova is obviously the experienced veteran who will be eager to end her title drought, but she’s fresh off playing two matches yesterday, and while she hasn’t lost a set this tournament, her second serve can cause her problems. Vekic has been rock solid this tournament and this feels like her breakthrough moment, as she’s often fell short on the big stage.
I like Vekic to get the job done in two competitive sets.
