Novak Djokovic and Hyeon Chung meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Rogers Cup.

Novak Djokovic will take the court for the first time since winning the Wimbledon, which was his first major title in over two years and his first title overall in 13 months. Djokovic looked human for the last year or so and wasn’t playing p to his elite standards, but it’s quite clear that top tier player is back in form. Djokovic has now won 15 of his last 17 matches and has won 30 of his last 36 sets played. Djokovic is back to playing high level defense, keeping the ball in play and still knows how to put a match away once he has his opponent on the ropes. The only thing left for Djokovic to prove is that he can get the job done on hard court. Djokovic has lost three straight matches on hard court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Hyeon Chung enters this tournament in shaky form, as he’s lost four of his last six matches and has been losing to players he probably shouldn’t be losing to. Chung started the season on fire, which included making the semifinals of the Australin Open and quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Chung proved he’s one of the top young players in the world, but he’s clearly struggling right now and is fresh off a match in which he had seven double faults and won just 53 percent of his total service points. Maybe a match in a high profile tournament against a top tier player can get those juices flowing and push Chung to return to the player he was earlier in the season. Chung has split his last six matches on hard court.

These two have split their previous two meetings with Chung winning this years Australian Open and Djokovic winning the 2016 Australian Open. Both matches were decided in straight sets.

Chung is more than capable of winning a match like this when he’s playing well, but he’s not to put it kindly. Oh, it also doesn’t help that Djokovic is well rested and looking like the top player in the world again. Djokovic struggled on hard court earlier in the year, but he’s head and shoulders a better player than he was a couple of months ago. It’s tough seeing Chung improve that much from his previous matches to get the job done here.

Djokovic wins likely in straight sets.
