Alize Cornet vs. Angelique Kerber

August 2018

TV: ESPN2

Angelique Kerber and Alize Cornet meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rogers Cup.

Angelique Kerber will play her first match since winning the Wimbledon, which was her third grand slam title of her career. Kerber has won the last 12 sets she’s played and won 66 percent of her total service points in the final against Serena Williams. When Kerber is controlling the pace, being aggressive and hitting her spots with confidence, she’s proven time and time again she’s one of the best players on the planet. The issues at times for Kerber has been the questionable decision making and the struggles with her second serve. Right now, however, Kerber is as hot as any player in this tournament and has to be oozing with confidence. Kerber has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Alize Cornet is coming off a three sets win over Tatjana Maria that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Cornet won 68 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points. Cornet won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 14 break chances. It was one of the more complete performances we’ve seen from Cornet this year and one that would give her a fair shot to advance even further if she can repeat it. The issue for Cornet is her second serve, as she needs to be better as the competition improves. Cornet has two career wins over top-10 players this season. Cornet has lost four of her last six matches on hard court.

These two have played four times and Kerber has won three of those matches. The most recent meeting was in Beijing of last year, a match Cornet won in straight sets.

Cornet has a chance to make this a competitive match based on her last showing and the fact she’s beaten Kerber in the only meeting on hard court. However, when Kerber is playing the way she’s currently playing, she’s tough to bet against. When she has every part of her game going and is hitting her spots, you can count on one hand how many players can beat her. Cornet isn’t on that lost.

I like Kerber to win this match.
