Grigor Dimitrov and Frances Tiafoe meet in the third round round of the 2018 tennis Rogers Cup.

Grigor Dimitrov is coming off a three sets win over Fernando Verdasco that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Dimitrov won 77 percent of his first serve points and 52 percent of his second serve points. Dimitrov won 67 percent of his total service points and was broken on just one of five break points. Dimitrov looked good for the most part and it was a much needed win for a player who entered this tournament losing six of his last 11 matches. The issue now for Dimitrov is to build on such a performance and keep that consistency going, as he’s looked nothing like a top-10 player over the last couple of months. Dimitrov has won two matches in a single tournament just once since the Madrid Masters. Yeah, it’s been struggle for the 27-year-old. Dimitrov has lost four of his last six matches on hard court.

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Frances Tiafoe is coming off a three sets win over Milos Raonic that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Tiafoe won 72 percent of his first serve points and 83 percent of his second serve points. Tiafoe won 75 percent of his total service points and was broken just once in his victory. We knew Tiafoe always had the ability to beat quality players in big tournaments, but if he’s going to play at that level consistently, we’re going to see the American fly up the rankings rather quickly. It was easily one of the biggest victories of the year for Tiafoe and one that should give him a lot of confidence moving forward. The thing now is Tiafoe has to build on that and put together solid performances. Don’t tease the tennis fans and fizzle out. Tiafoe has two career wins over top-10 players. Tiafoe has won four of his last six matches on hard court.

This will be the first meeting between these two players.

Tiafoe has been lights out with his first serve in back-to-back matches, so maybe this isn’t a fluke. If he can continue to hit the ball the way he currently is, Tiafoe is more than capable of pushing for a semifinal appearance. Dimitrov was solid in his last performance, but one victory doesn’t erase the fact he entered this tournament losing six of his last 11 matches.

Based on the form of both players, there’s value backing Tiafoe here.
