TV: ESPN 2

Marin Cilic and Marius Copil meet in the second round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.

Marin Cilic is coming off a quarterfinal trip in Toronto in which he pushed Rafael Nadal to the brink but came up short after a brilliant first set. Cilic was playing some of his best tennis in that opening set, but it looked like he ran out of gas and couldn’t sustain the level of play for the long haul. The good news is Cilic has won 12 of his last 15 matches and has been hitting his spots with more aggressiveness and confidence. Cilic now heads to Cincinnati, a tournament he won back in 2016, which was his last appearance at this event. You can expect another solid showing from Cilic given his current form. Cilic has won four of his last six matches on hard court.

Marin Cilic vs. Marius Copil 2018 Cincinnati Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

Marius Copil is coming off a straight sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Copil won 86 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Copil won 80 percent of his total service points and had 13 aces and zero unforced errors. Copil managed to win one of his more impressive matches of the season with nearly a flawless performance, as he got 78 percent of his first serves in play. While Copil doesn’t have a track record of success in big tournaments, he’s going to give himself a fair shot to win this match as well if he can replicate that serving ability. This would be Copil’s biggest win of the season given the past struggles. Copil has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2012 Beijing Open, a match Copil won in three sets. The match took 32 games to be decided.

Copil is worth a look as a live underdog given the way he just served, but there’s little to believe he can repeat that performance. Copil has had trouble putting together back-to-back winning performances and has been on the losing side quite a bit. Cilic is one of the hotter players in the world right now and just had Nadal on the ropes. Cilic is playing at a very high level and wants to defend his crown.

Cilic wins in straights.
