August 2018

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN 2

Roger Federer and Peter Gojowczyk meet in the second round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.

Roger Federer hasn’t played a match since being bounced in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon, so it’s going to be interesting to see how much rest there is with one of the top ranked players in the world. Federer was very sharp in grass court season, but he’s coming off a match in which he was broken four times and had 33 unforced errors. Of course, Federer has to be rather confident in this tournament considering he’s won it seven times, which includes each of his last two appearances. Federer has lost before the third round of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 three times since 2015. Federer hasn’t lost in the second round of Cincinnati since 2006. Federer has won five of his last seven matches on hard court.

Roger Federer vs. Peter Gojowczyk 2018 Cincinnati Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Peter Gojowczyk is coming off a three sets win over Joao Sousa that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Gojowczyk won 84 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Gojowczyk won 74 percent of his service points and had 14 aces, producing a much needed victory as a slight underdog. Gojowczyk entered this tournament on a five-match losing streak and was in need of any confidence boost to turn his season around. Gojowczyk now hopes to win two matches in a single tournament for the first time since making the final in Geneva. Gojowczyk has two career wins over top-10 players. Gojowczyk has lost four of his last five matches on hard court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Gojowczyk hasn’t played well enough this season to give him a shot to beat a rated Federer, who has dominated this tournament whenever he’s played. Gojowczyk has had trouble winning sets the last couple of months, let alone matches. This should be a rather routine match for the guy who won this event the last two times he’s played.

Federer cruises in straight sets.
