Kevin Anderson and David Goffin meet in the third round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.
Kevin Anderson is coming off a straight sets win over Jeremy Chardy that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Anderson won 95 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Anderson lost just two of 37 first serve points and saved his only break point he faced. Anderson continues the formula of lights out serving and doing just enough with the return to seal the victory. When Anderson wins 70-plus percent of his total service points, he’s one of the tougher players on tour to play. Anderson has a shot to make the quarterfinals of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the fifth time this year. Anderson has never made the quarterfinals in the Cincinnati Open. Anderson has won 10 of his last 13 matches on hard court.

David Goffin is coming off a three sets win over Benoit Paire that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Goffin won 65 percent of his first serve points and 56 percent of his second serve points. Goffin won 63 percent of his total service points and saved nine of his 12 break points. Goffin has to improve his second serve if he’s going to win this match, but he has produced a combined nine breaks in his last two matches. Goffin has done enough to win, but he has to take his game to another level in order to have a shot here. Goffin has a shot to make the quarterfinals of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the third time this year. Goffin has never made the quarterfinals in the Cincinnati Open. Goffin has won four of his last six matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2009 Todi Challenger, a match Goffin won in straight sets. The match took 21 games to be decided.
Goffin is solid and capable of a surprise here and there, but he’s not consistent enough to beat the top players in the world. Few players have had a better season than Anderson, and he’s serving at such a level that his opponent has to play near flawless tennis. Goffin has too many letdowns in his game to win this match.
Anderson makes yet another quarterfinal.
