Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Ekaterina Makarova that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 76 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 67 percent of her total service points and was able to break on five of her 11 break points. Goerges can still improve her serve consistency, but she’s kind of built the reputation of being a grinder who is feisty with the return and does just enough to outlast her opponent. Matches are rarely flawless with the German, but she gets the job done more times than not. Goerges has a chance to reach her third final of the year and her 14th final appearance of her career. Goerges has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in this years Eastbourne International, a match Sabalenka won in three sets. The match took 27 games to be decided.
I bet against Sabalenka yesterday and it didn’t work out well. It’s time to just accept that Sabalenka has arrived and there’s probably no turning back. She’s serving at a high level for the most part and her returns always put pressure on her opponent. Sabalenka is piling up the deep tournament runs and she’s starting to play with more confidence. She’s a player to watch closely moving forward.
Sabalenka reaches her third final of the year.
