The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Angelique Kerber and Ajla Tomljanovic meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Angelique Kerber has cooled off big time since winning the Wimbledon, as she’s lost two of her last three matches and five of her last eight sets. Kerber is coming off a match in which she won 32 percent of her return points and had five double faults. The good news is that Kerber is always a win or two away from bouncing back and being a threat to win any tournament you put in front of her. Kerber should also be motivated considering she lost in the first round of last years US Open. Kerber has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2017. Kerber has lost two of her last three matches on hard court.

Ajla Tomljanovic is coming off a second round exit in Cincinnati, but she has won five of her last seven matches when you include qualifying. Tomljanovic is playing some decent tennis currently and was able to take a set from Simona Halep before losing in three sets, which she won 42 percent of her return points. Tomljanovic is a live underdog in her current form and is a dangerous first round opponent. Tomljanovic has one career win over a top-10 player, which came in 2014. Tomljanovic has lost in the first round of a grand slam in five of her last six appearances. Tomljanovic has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2015 French Open, a match Kerber won in straight sets. The match took 17 games to be decided.
If Kerber doesn’t get back on track, Tomljanovic is more than capable of winning this match. We’ve seen Kerber look like the best player in the world, and then we’ve seen her lose matches she has no business losing. Do not take Tomljanovic lightly with the way she’s playing.
I’m still siding with Kerber, but I wouldn’t be shocked if this thing went three sets.
