TV: ESPN

Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Rafael Nadal is fresh off winning the Canadian Open and enters this tournament winning 23 of his last 25 matches. Nadal has won 10 of his last 11 sets played and is coming off a performance in which he won 79 percent of his total service points. Needless to say, Nadal is in rare form right now and should probably be considered the favorite to win this tournament. As long as that serve holds up, it’s going to take something special to beat Nadal with the way he’s playing. Nadal hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2016 Australian Open. Nadal has never lost in the first round of the US Open. Nadal has won 11 of his last 13 matches on hard court.

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

David Ferrer is just trying to find himself right now, as he’s lost nine of his last 11 matches and eight of his last nine sets. At this point you have to question if Ferrer has just lost it considering he’s now 36 years old. Ferrer was never the most talented player in the world, but he outworked the competition and grinded matches out like none other. Ferrer has never been afraid of lengthy matches, as he usually had more left in the tank and would do just enough to close the deal. Tennis fans can only hope Ferrer turns this around at some point, as it’s not pretty right now. Ferrer has lost in the first round of a grand slam in each of his last four appearances. Ferrer has lost three straight matches on hard court.

Nadal has won 10 of the last 13 matches against Ferrer, with the most recent match coming in Abu Dhabi in 2016, a match Nadal won in three sets. Ferrer hasn’t beaten Nadal since the 2014 Monte Carlo. Each of the last three matches have gone the distance.

These two Spaniards have played each other a ton, so normally this would be an intriguing grand slam match. However, Ferrer is a shell of himself right now and Nadal is playing out of this world tennis. It’s a complete mismatch no matter how you slice it.

Nadal rolls in likely straight sets.
