Simona Halep and Kaia Kanepi meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a final appearance in Cincinnati in which she lost, and she didn’t play in Connecticut in order to be fresh for this tournament. Halep is currently enjoying the best year of her life, as she’s playing at an extremely high level and has improved her mental game that let her down so many times in the past. In her last performance, however, Halep struggled with her serve and was broken four times. Halep hasn’t lost back-to-back matches since last years US Open and Wuhan. Halep has lost in the first round of a grand slam three times since 2016. Halep has won nine of her last 10 matches on hard court.

Kaia Kanepi enters this tournament splitting her last 10 matches and struggling to find success on the WTA stage. Kanepi has had some recent success in ITF play, which includes winning a title in Italy back in June. Kanepi has had her most success with her return in recent matches and has displayed solid groundstrokes, but she must improve her second serve if she’s going to have any success in this match. Kanepi can’t give away easy points with a lollipop service game like past matches. Kanepi has lost in the first round of a grand slam in four of her last seven appearances. Kanepi has won three of her last four matches on hard court.
These two played once, which was in the 2014 Doha Open, a match Halep won in three sets. The match took 32 games to be decided.
Kanepi is a respectable first round opponent, as she is a top-50 player and has seem some success in grand slam play. However, betting against Halep in her current form isn’t an option, as she’s playing the best tennis of her life and has been as focused as ever. We’re seeing less and less of Halep beating herself.
Halep wins this match in straight sets.
