TV: ESPN

Kaia Kanepi and Jil Teichmann meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Kaia Kanepi is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Kanepi won 64 percent of her first serve points and 60 percent of her second serve points. Kanepi won 51 percent of her return points and produced five breaks on seven chances. Kanepi is the first player in US Open history to beat the top seeded player in the first round, and she did so despite having 28 unforced errors. There’s likely not going to be a bigger upset this year, and it will be interesting to see if Kanepi is capable of handling all the attention or if this moment will create a letdown situation. Kanepi hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time since 2016. Kanepi has won four of her last five matches on hard court.

Kaia Kanepi vs. Jil Teichmann 2018 US Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Jil Teichmann is coming off a straight sets win over Dalila Jakupovic that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Teichmann won 100 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Teichmann won all 21 of her first serve points and won the last eight games to close out the match. Teichmann has now won 11 of her last 14 sets played when you include qualifying, and she’s been serving at a very high level in these matches overall. Still, Teichmann is very green when it comes to big tournaments at 21 years old, so nerves are the No. 1 question for me when it comes to the young Swiss. This is Teichmann’s first ever grand slam appearance. Teichmann has a chance to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Teichmann has won four straight matches on hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

Usually it would be a good time to fade somebody like Kanepi, who is coming off one of the bigger wins of her career and should be getting a lot of media attention. But she is a 33-year-old who has made her fair share of grand slam quarterfinal appearances, so she should be able to bounce back. Teichmann is serving at a high level, but she’s a 21-year-old who has never been on a stage this big. Young players like this usually get swallowed up in grand slam play.

I’ll take Kanepi to win another match.
