TV: ESPN

Rafael Nadal and Vasek Pospisil meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over David Ferrer that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 69 percent of his first serve points and 50 percent of his second serve points. Nadal only had to play a set and a half to secure victory before Ferrer retired due to injury. While I’m sure Nadal is disappointed, the extra rest certainly doesn’t hurt his chances to make a run at another grand slam title. Nadal did have 22 unforced errors int he match, but staying fresh should be his biggest concern, something he was able to obviously do. Nadal hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for his 10th straight appearance. Nadal hasn’t lost before the third round of the US Open since 2004. Nadal has won 10 of his last 11 matches on hard court.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Vasek Pospisil is coming off a straight sets win over Lukas Lacko that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Pospisil won 81 percent of his first serve points and 43 percent of his second serve points. Pospisil got 61 percent of his first serves in play and saved four of his six break points. While the recent grand slam success is not there, Pospisil gives himself a punchers chance to hang around in this match if he can continue to be a beast with that first serve. Pospisil has a chance to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2015 Wimbledon. Pospisil has never made the third round of the US Open. Pospisil has four career wins over top-10 players, with the most recent coming last year in Indian Wells. Pospisil won four of his last five matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Beijing Open, a match Nadal won in straight sets. The match took 23 games to be decided.

Let’s make this brief; Nadal was my pick to win this tournament and while he did have a bunch of unforced errors, nobody is beating him as long as he keeps his body fresh. The less wear and tear, and Nadal will be favored against anybody he plays. While others had to play three or more hours in the first round, Nadal played less than an hour and a half. Pospisil won his first grand slam match since 2016.

Nadal cruises in this match in straight sets.
