August 2018

The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

TV: ESPN

Dusan Lajovic and John Isner meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Dusan Lajovic is coming off a four sets win over Cameron Norrie that took 36 games to decide. In the victory, Lajovic won 73 percent of his first serve points and 49 percent of his second serve points. Lajovic won 63 percent of his total service points and saved 11 of his 14 break points. Lajovic was in control of the match from start to finish despite the 47 unforced errors, and he was pretty solid with his second serve. Lajovic has dominated six of the eight sets he’s played, but he must clean up the errors if this is going to be a rare deep grand slam appearance. Lajovic has a chance to make his second career grand slam fourth round appearance and the first since the 2014 French Open. Lajovic has won four of his last five matches on hard court.

Dusan Lajovic vs. John Isner 2018 US Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

John Isner is coming off a five sets win over Nicolas Jarry that took 55 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 84 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Isner came back from being down two sets, and he won 79 percent of his total service points while hitting 38 aces. Isner was able to take advantage of the home crowd and do just enough in the final set with his return. The only issue with Isner is conditioning, as playing over three and a half hours doesn’t help when there’s another match after one day of rest. Isner hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the third straight appearance. Isner has a shot at his fourth career US Open fourth round appearance. Isner has split his last six matches on hard court.

These two have played six times and Isner has won four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in this years Davis Cup, a match Isner won in five sets. Isner has won the last three matches against Lajovic.

Isner has owned the head to head against Lajovic and only one of those matches was on hard court. That gives him a massive advantage, as if he can win on clay and grass, he has a clear edge on this surface where his serve really pops. Lajovic has too many errors for my taste and doesn’t have the home crowd on his side.

While probably tired, Isner should serve his way to the fourth round.
