The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Juan Martin Del Potro and Fernando Verdasco meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis US Open.
Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a straight sets win over Denis Kudla that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 85 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro won 80 percent of his total service points, hit 20 aces and didn’t face a single break point. Del Potro has now been broken just three times in his last 11 sets played. As long as his wrist holds up and he’s feeling fresh, Del Potro has to like where he’s at in the tournament right now. Del Potro hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fifth time in his last 10 appearances. Del Potro has made at least the fourth round of the US Open in five of his last seven appearances. Del Potro has won seven of his last nine matches on hard court.

Fernando Verdasco is coming off a four sets win over Andy Murray that took 40 games to decide. In the victory, Verdasco won 65 percent of his first serve points and 45 percent of his second serve points. Verdasco won rather easily despite winning just 58 percent of his total service points and racking up 48 unforced errors. On the positive side, Verdasco did have 52 winners and that’s going to give him a shot against anybody when he can finish points that way. Verdasco has won six of his last seven sets, but he must play cleaner tennis against better competition. Verdasco has a chance to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the third time since 2015. Verdasco hasn’t made the fourth round of the US Open since 2010. Verdasco has won three of his last five matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Del Potro has won four of those matches. The most recent match was in Sweden in 2017, a match Del Potro won in three sets. Verdasco’s only win over Del Potro was in 2011 in San Jose.
As long as Del Potro doesn’t have a flair up with his wrist and is feeling fine, he’s on pace to make a deep run in a grand slam. Verdasco has the shotmaking skills to win this match, but he also has the high unforced errors that can take him out of a match against a quality player. Murray wasn’t conditioned enough to make Verdasco pay. It will likely be different here.
Del Potro cruises.
