TV: ESPN

Elise Mertens and Sloane Stephens meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Elise Mertens is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Mertens won 69 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Mertens got 66 percent of her first serves in play and won 60 percent of her total service points. Mertens could still improve her second serve, but she gives herself a shot to compete when getting such a high percentage of first serves in play. Mertens has really shown consistency on hard court this season and has won 19 of her last 27 sets. Mertens hopes to make a grand slam quarterfinal for the second time in her career. Mertens is 1-1 in previous grand slam fourth round matches. Mertens has won nine of her last 11 matches on hard court.

Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Sloane Stephens is coming off a straight sets win over Victoria Azarenka that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 65 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Stephens won 60 percent of her total service points and saved five of her seven break points. Stephens looked much sharper than she did in her second round match, and the clean victory over a grand slam champion can only improve her confidence. Stephens has now won 17 of her last 22 sets and is a nightmare as long as she keeps the ball in play ad forces her opponent to hit winners. Stephens hopes to make her fifth career grand slam quarterfinal and back-to-back US Open quarterfinal trips. Stephens is 4-6 in career grand slam fourth round matches. Stephens has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in this years Cincinnati Masters, a match Mertens won in straight sets. The match took 21 games to be decided.

Considering these two just played and Mertens won, there’s reason to consider the upset. However, Stephens on US soil, particularly the US Open, is a completely different player, as she has that pep in her step and the entire building gets behind her. In that match Stephens wasn’t getting anything on her serve and was broken five times, something she’s improved in her last three matches.

Tight match, but Stephens reaches her fifth grand slam quarterfinal.
