TV: ESPN

Kaia Kanepi and Serena Williams meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Kaia Kanepi is coming off a straight sets win over Rebecca Peterson that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Kanepi won 65 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Kanepi won 60 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 16 break points. Kanepi has yet to drop a set this tournament and is losing an average of 7.3 games per match. If Kanepi can clean up her unforced errors, she has a shot to make things interesting. Kanepi has a chance to win four matches in a single tournament for the first time since winning an ITF title in Brescia back in June. Kanepi has a chance to make her seventh career grand slam quarterfinal and back-to-back US Open quarterfinals. Kanepi has just one grand slam quarterfinal appearance since 2014. Kanepi has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Venus Williams that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 88 percent of her first serve points and 37 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 70 percent of her total service points and saved her only break point. It was easily the best match Serena has played since her return, and if she continues to serve the way she has, she’s winning this title with ease. The only question for Serena right now is the ankle she rolled, as I’m sure it will be swollen come tomorrow morning. Serena hopes to make the quarterfinal of a grand slam for the 12th time in her last 13 tries. Serena hasn’t been bounced before the quarterfinals of the US Open since 2006. Serena has won four of her last six matches on hard court.

These two have played four times and Serena has won all four matches in straight sets. The most recent meeting was in the 2014 US Open. The other three matches took place in 2009 or earlier.

Talk about a blast from the past matchup, and Kanepi has a chance to knock off the top two favorites of the tournament after beating Simona Halep in the first round. With that said, Serena isn’t losing with the way she’s serving. She’s getting so many free points with her serve recently, looking awfully like the Serena of old. There is the ankle roll that should leave some reason of concern, but she did mention during the postgame interview that she rolls her ankles often, so it’s nothing new.

Serena reaches the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the 12th time in her last 13 tries.
