TV: ESPN

Carla Suarez Navarro and Maria Sharapova meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Carla Suarez Navarro is coming off a three sets win over Caroline Garcia that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Navarro won 73 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Navarro won 68 percent of her total service points and grinded out a victory despite 42 unforced errors. Navarro has managed to win all three of her matches in three sets and has been highly successful with her serve when it matters most. If Navarro can clean up the unforced errors, she’ll have a much easier time with her opponents. Navarro has a chance to make her seventh career grand slam quarterfinal and second ever in the US Open. Navarro has lost five of her last six grand slam fourth round appearances. Navarro has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Maria Sharapova is coming off a straight sets win over Jelena Ostapenko that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 81 percent of her first serve points and 29 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova won 59 percent of her return points and converted on seven of her 18 break points. Sharapova is finding ways to win these matches, but she continues to have hiccups in her service game and allows opponents to hang around. Sharapova has been broken nine times this tournament and is putting a lot of pressure on her return to be successful. Sharapova has a chance to make her third grand slam quarterfinal since 2016. Sharapova hasn’t made a quarterfinal in the US Open since 2012. Sharapova has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.

These two have played five times and Sharapova has won four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in 2015 in Rome, a match Sharapova won in three sets. Navarro’s only win over Sharapova came in the 2014 Canadian Masters. Three of the five matches have been decided in straight sets.

Sharapova may not be playing at the level she’s used to playing, but she’s hitting the ball sharper each match and has been really impressive with her return. If Sharapova can just find a way to serve more consistently. Navarro has been sharp on hard court this season, but she’s had a lot of unforced errors, and it nearly cost her in her last match. There’s only so many matches you can win when allowing your opponent to hang around.

Sharapova makes her first US Open quarterfinal in six years.
