TV: ESPN

Joao Sousa and Novak Djokovic meet in the fourth round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Joao Sousa is coming off a four sets win over Lucas Pouille that took 49 games to decide. In the victory, Sousa won 70 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points. Sousa won 65 percent of his total service points and won three tiebreaks to advance to his first ever grand slam fourth round. Despite a lack of aces, Sousa has served at a very high level this tournament and has been able to win majority of the big points. Needless to say, this isn’t the same Sousa we’ve seen much of the season, as he entered this tournament on a seven-match losing streak. This is the type of success that could turn Sousa’s season around moving forward. Sousa has a chance to make his first ever grand slam quarterfinal. Sousa has split his last six matches on hard court.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Richard Gasquet that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 75 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic won 71 percent of his total service points and saved all five of his break points. It was easily the best performance for Djokovic this tournament, as he didn’t allow his opponent to steal a set and keep things interesting like his previous two matches. As long as Djokovic is serving well, he’s a nightmare to play against, as you know his defense and return ability usually always show up. Djokovic hopes to make the quarterfinals of a grand slam for the 34th time in his last 37 tries. Djokovic hasn’t been bounced before the quarterfinals of the US Open since 2006. Djokovic has won 11 of his last 12 matches on hard court.

These two have played four times and Djokovic has won all four meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 French Open, a match Djokovic won in 26 games. All four matches were decided in straight sets.

Give Sousa credit for finally getting over the hump in a grand slam tournament and putting his struggles behind him. Unfortunately, Sousa runs into a player he hasn’t come close to beating, losing all four matches in straight sets. It also doesn’t help that Djokovic is coming off his best match of the tournament yet and seems to be serving more consistently. Based on the head to head history and the fact Djokovic doesn’t lose in grand slams before the quarters, there’s only one way this match ends.

Djokovic rolls in straight sets.
