Jessica Pegula vs Sofia Kenin

Sofia Kenin will be playing Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the 2018 WTA Coupe Banque Nationale tournament in Quebec City, Canada.
Jessica Pegula entered this tournament as a qualifier but has played much better than her ranking suggests. Pegula enters this match having eliminated Petra Martic in the quarterfinals and that victory would be a huge confidence boost for the American as she beat the number 2 seed. In the win, Jessica Pegula served exceptionally well as she only allowed her opponent to break her serve once. Furthermore, Pegula had a very high first serve percentage of 71% and she managed to win an impressive 82% on the first serve. Such strong serving made it hard for Martic to have a chance in the match as she had very few chances to break serve. Jessica Pegula has never made it this far in a WTA event before and she will hope that she can continue further using her strong form.

On the other side of the court, Sofia Kenin has cruised into the semifinals having won all her matches with ease in straight sets. This trend continued in the quarterfinals as she beat the number 3 seed, Monica Puig. In that victory, Kenin looked dominant as she only allowed her opponent to win 4 games in the entire match. Kenin served exceptionally well as she prevented Puig from breaking serve and followed that by applying great amounts of pressure when receiving serve. Sofia Kenin won close to 50% of the points played while Puig was serving. Sofia Kenin is the highest ranked player remaining in this tournament and she will hope to continue her form and win her first WTA title.
These two have played once in the past with Jessica Pegula winning on that occasion. The match occurred in 2016 and while the result will give Jessica Pegula confidence, it is not a great indicator for this match since Sofia Kenin was only 16 at the time and that match was played on clay.
While Jessica Pegula has impressed in this tournament, I think Sofia Kenin will end her run. Kenin has looked very strong in this tournament and considering how easily she has been winning, I don’t see how any player can stop her. Kenin is the higher ranked player and is in better form so I see her winning this match.
