TV: Tennis

Camila Giorgi and Victoria Azarenka meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Pan Pacific Open.

Camila Giorgi is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Wozniacki that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Giorgi won 62 percent of her first serve points and 66 percent of her second serve points. Giorgi won 64 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her 16 break points. Giorgi has improved her serve as of late, and it’s the reason she’s now won seven of her last nine matches when you include qualifying. Giorgi won as a +145 underdog in her last match, and gave herself tons of break points to pick up an impressive win over a top-10 player. It’s a victory that can certainly help push Giorgi into a possible final appearance. Giorgi now hopes to win three matches in a single tournament for the firs time since Wimbledon. Giorgi has won four of her last five matches on indoor hard court.

Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Victoria Azarenka is coming off a straight sets win over Ashleigh Barty that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Azarenka won 61 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Azarenka won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her seven break points. Azarenka has struggled with consistency since returning to the sport, but she’s won each of her last four sets and has now won five of her last seven matches. We’re seeing flashes of Azarenka returning to the player she was before her pregnancy, and if that continues, she’s a real threat to leave this tournament with a title. Azarenka has a chance to win three matches in a single tournament for the first time since the Miami Open. Azarenka has won her last two matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played once, which was in Eastbourne of 2014, a match Giorgi won in three sets. The match took 31 games to be decided.

With Azarenka hitting the ball the way she is and the unforced error numbers dropping, you have to side with her in this match. Giorgi beating Wozniacki would be impressive if she didn’t look like the same player from the US Open, a player with nothing on her serve and making too many silly mistakes. Azarenka should be able to control the pace in this match and finish points a lot easier.

Azarenka makes the semifinals.
