Magdalena Rybarikova and Dominika Cibulkova meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis Wuhan Open.

Magdalena Rybarikova enters this tournament losing eight of her last 10 matches and each of her last five sets. Rybarikova is coming off a match in South Korea in which she retired early in the second set, a match in which she was broken three times and won just 25 percent of her second serve points. Rybarikova simply isn’t the same player she was when making the final in Birmingham, and not much is going to improve until she does a better job with her second serve. Rybarikova has been broken nine times in her last three sets and has won just 11 of her last 39 second serve points. If Rybarikova can improve in that area, she’ll likely be much more competitive in these matches. Rybarikova has lost five of her last six matches on hard court.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Dominika Cibulkova enters this tournament splitting her last eight matches, and most of her recent losses have come against top quality players who are in great form. Cibulkova didn’t look great in her last match against Naomi Osaka, but she made the quarterfinals in Wimbledon and the fourth round of the US Open, showing her consistency and the improved play in big tournaments. With a player as feisty and competitive as Cibulkova, she should be able to use those recent runs as building blocks heading into a much more wide open event. Cibulkova is worth keeping a close eye on, as she has the ability to be a dark horse in this tournament. Cibulkova has won three of her last five matches on hard court.

These two have played twice and Cibulkova has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2012 Australian Open, a match Cibulkova won in straight sets.

Cibulkova has not only made light work of Rybarikova in the past, but she’s playing much better tennis right now. Rybarikova isn’t going to beat above-average players until her second serve improves, and Cibulkova is probably playing her most consistent tennis of the year. The losses for Cibulkova recently have just been bad luck, as she’s had some brutal draws.

Cibulkova wins this match, remaining unbeaten against Rybarikova.
