Caroline Wozniacki and Rebecca Peterson meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wuhan Open.

Caroline Wozniacki is in need of a bounce back performance, as she enters this tournament losing five of her last six matches. Wozniacki simply hasn’t been herself since winning in Eastbourne and is coming off a three set loss in Japan where she was broken four times and got nothing on her second serve. We’re seeing Wozniacki pile up the unforced errors as well, something we rarely see from one of the cleaner tennis players in the world. I’m not sure if it’s fatigue or a lack of confidence, but Wozniacki isn’t the same player she was earlier in the year when consistently pushing for titles and winning her first grand slam. Of course, there’s a recent history of women struggling after winning a major tournament, so this is nothing new when you look at the big picture. Wozniacki has lost three of her last four matches on hard court.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Rebecca Peterson is coming off a three sets win over Timea Babos that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Peterson won 64 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Peterson won 59 percent of her total service points and produced six breaks on 15 break points. Peterson did a fine job of coming back after dropping a first set tiebreak and outlasted Babos before she retired late in the second set. Peterson has now won 10 of her last 13 matches when yo include qualifying, and she gives herself a chance here if she continues to be aggressive with her return. Peterson looks to earn her first career win over a top-10 player. Peterson has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

This is the first ever meeting between these two players.

Right now, it feels like anybody can beat Wozniacki in her current form, so you should tread lightly here. Wozniacki is making far too many errors than we’re used to seeing and the second serve is nonexistent. With that said, the struggles can only last for so long. Peterson is winning, but a lot of those recent wins have come in qualifying against subpar players. Peterson doesn’t have the best history when stepping up in competition and doesn’t have anything in her game that should scare Wozniacki.

This is a match Wozniacki should win, but who knows…
